What is a drop in turbo?
The term “drop in” is used in the turbocharger industry to identify a turbocharger that is made by one of the 5 major GENUINE TURBOCHARGER manufacturer’s to suit an application that may have originally had another brand of turbocharger on it.
A Cummins NTA855 truck has a Holset turbocharger factory fitted to the engine. Borg Warner and Garrett Advancing Motion have designed a turbocharger to the exact same specifications to fit in replacement to the originally fitted Holset with no change in performance.
DROP IN PART NUMBER EXAMPLE
ORIGINAL HOLSET PART NO: 3529040 (fitted at factory)
BORGWARNER DROP IN TURBO: 167050 (designed to suit application)
GARRETT DROP IN TURBO: 144700-0000 (designed to suit application)
All of these turbochargers have been designed to the exact same specifications, they are just different brands.
What is a dual sourced turbo?
It can also be the case that the vehicle manufacturer may have originally “dual sourced” the turbocharger to suit the same application (whether passenger vehicle or commercial diesel).
The 1.9L Audi A3 with BKC engine model was manufactured with either Borg Warner or Honeywell Garrett turbochargers factory fitted to the engine. The turbochargers have both been designed to meet the same specifications and so are interchangeable if the original turbocharger needs to be replaced, however the internals of the turbocharger will not be interchangeable with a different brand.
DUAL SOURCED PART NUMBER EXAMPLE
ORIGINAL BORGWARNER PART NO: 54399880022 (FITTED AT FACTORY)
ORIGINAL GARRETT PART NO: 751857-5004S (FITTED AT FACTORY)
