WHAT IS A DROP-IN TURBO?

The term “drop-in” is used within the turbocharger industry to identify a replacement turbo made by one of the nine Tier 1 genuine turbo manufacturers to replace another.

A Tier 1 drop-in replacement turbo is a premium OEM equivalent, designed to meet the same performance specifications and standards as the original factory fit OEM turbo, without modification in fitment.

EXAMPLE 1

The turbocharger supplied to Cummins for factory fitment to the Cummins NTA855 engine is manufactured by Holset.

Both Borg Warner and Garrett Advancing Motion have engineered their own turbochargers as a direct replacement.

EXAMPLE 2

The turbocharger supplied to Toyota for factory fitment to the Hilux 1KD-FTV engine is manufactured by IHI.

Both BMTS and Garrett Advancing Motion have engineered their own turbochargers as a direct replacement.

TIER 1 AND TIER 2 EXPLAINED

Tier 1 turbo manufacturers supply genuine turbos direct to Vehicle OEMs (e.g. Toyota, Volkswagen, Mack, Yanmar, John Deere etc.) for factory fitment to their engines.

The nine Tier 1 OEM turbo manufacturers are; BMTS Technology, Borg Warner, Continental, CZ, Garrett, Hitachi, Holset, IHI and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).

Tier 2 turbo manufacturers supply only to the aftermarket as an alternative all-makes replacement turbocharger with varying grades of precision and quality. These are not supported by Vehicle OEMs.

WHAT IS A DUAL SOURCED TURBO?

Vehicle OEMs will occasionally dual source a turbocharger from two different Tier 1 OEM turbo manufacturers for the same vehicle or engine application.

These are then both OEM factory fit turbos.

EXAMPLE

The 1.9L Audi A3 with BKC engine model was manufactured by Audi with either a Borg Warner BV39 turbo or a Garrett GT1646MV turbo factory fitted to the engine.

These turbochargers have both been designed to meet the same specifications and are interchangeable if the original turbocharger needs replacing.

The internals of each respective turbocharger brand are not interchangeable however.
